A team of industry professionals convened by Spielwarenmesse, Germany’s best-known trade show firm, recently announced its predictions for next year’s top trends in the toy industry.
After months of collecting and comparing data from many nations, the group, which includes the U.S.’s popular Reyne Rice, says consumers worldwide will be looking for products that support new (and some not-so-new) attitudes and mind-sets.
Retailers and manufacturers can expect to see the following three main trends influencing international toy sales through 2017.
- Body and Mind – Many children lead busy lives that are ruled by the clock and governed by school and extra-curricular activities — often giving rise to stress. This trend spotlights products that encourage the physical and mental well-being of children through play. And in conjunction with fitness and physical activity, these products will help children enjoy a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
- Girl Power –As they go through life, girls should be instilled with the strength, confidence and independence to pursue their interests and goals. More and more toys are encouraging them to believe in their dreams. These products endow girls with the tools they need to test themselves and to pave their way to the profession of their choice.
- Swap & Collect – Collecting is a hobby that is loved by young and old. Closely entwined with the idea of trading, it is a pastime that also promotes social skills like friendly negotiation for missing pieces. Collecting and trading is a pleasurable and lasting hobby that has the potential to spring new surprises on collectors at any time. Licences create additional incentives for this classic theme.
A spokesman for Spielwarenmesse, which organizes the 2017 German International Toy Fair, says products reflecting the latest trends will be on display February 1 to 6 in the exhibition’s TrendGallery.
