Brown Bear’s 50th Anniversary Marked by New Format Books

Brown Bear and Friends 50th anniversary set from Canada's Raincoast Books

The 50th anniversary of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, one of the first books co-penned by famed author/illustrator Eric Carle, doesn’t officially get underway until next year.

However, the U.S.’s Macmillian Publishers is marking the milestone a little bit early with the launch of several special anniversary publications for kids. The list of new material coming off press on September 6 includes:

  • a 50th-anniversary jacketed, hardcover edition of Brown Bear and an accompanying audio CD that features actor Gwyneth Paltrow reading the story;
  • a 50th-anniversary padded, 15.8 x 20-cm (6.25 x 8-in.) board book edition;
  • a novelty lift-the-tab board book, with the tabs featuring all the animals that Brown Bear encounters.

The New York-based publisher (rep’d in Canada by Raincoast Books) will also package Brown Bear with three later bear-themed books by Carle and author Bill Martin Jr. in a special gift-box collection titled Brown Bear & Friends.

The original Brown Bear title, which has gone on to sell 14+ million copies in the U.S. alone, also spawned a wide range of licensed merchandise over the years. In support of the Brown Bear anniversary, expect to see special products, such as plush from Kids Preferred (rep’d in Canada by RNS Sales) and board games from University Games (rep’d in Canada by Kroeger Inc.).
