Under a new deal with NBC Universal, toy giant Mattel Inc. has been named the worldwide master toy licensee for Jurassic World, a lucrative and evergreen franchise that includes everything from films and clothing to theme park attractions.
Starting July 2017, Mattel will have the right to design, produce and market a wide variety of toys, such as action figures, playsets, vehicles, games, plush and role-play — all based on the popular dino-driven property.
Last summer’s blockbuster Jurassic World was the third follow-up film to 1993′s classic and award-winning Jurassic Park. It was the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, bringing in more than US$1.67 billion at the global box office. A much-anticipated fourth sequel (fifth film in the franchise), helmed by Steven Spielberg and starring Chris Pratt, is scheduled for release in 2018.
A Mattel spokesman says consumers should start seeing the first of its new Jurassic World-themed products in early 2018, just in time for the sequel.
