Yvan David and Susan Hebblethwaite, co-owners of Quebec’s Family Games America (FGA), may not be going to the 2012 Academy Awards, but their best-selling board game, Cathedral, sure is!
The classic and classy wooden game will be included in the collection of luxury products and services given to Oscar nominees, just prior to their red-carpet stroll past cameras on February 26. It’s the first time a board game has ever been part of the prestigious bag of swag, said an FGA spokesman. The gift bags traditionally include everything from Cadillacs to crystal wine glasses.
David and Hebblethwaite acquired the world-wide distributorship for Cathedral 25 years ago when they first founded Family Games. The game, now in its 30th year, is a test of strategy and spatial-planning that involves staking out territory within a walled medieval city. As beautiful to look at as it is fun to play, Cathedral is a multi-award winner, remaining one of the pair’s best-selling games. Today, FGA offers five editions of the title, including a travel version.
